Trail Blog 4/30/08

It has been awhile since I have written anything for the ‘trail blog’, so I thought I would get things up to date, somewhat. In case you were wondering, I have been out for a few short hikes around the Nolichucky River, and Spivey Gap areas.. I also took a couple of memorable hikes in the Sampson Mountain Wilderness Area to view and take pictures of waterfalls. The photos didn’t turn out too well, however, since I took them with a disposable camera, knowing I would most likely break a ‘good’ one climbing those falls. The trip up to ‘Devil’s Fork’ Falls was quite awesome, and I hung out there by the middle set of falls for some time, just enjoying nature–fresh air, sunshine, and of course, the water. waterfalls

Also, went out with Rat to do trail maintenence on his 5-mile section of the Appalachian Trail, where we removed several blow-downs, and dug out many water-bars. Having been dropped off near the summit of Big Bald Mountain by another maintainer, we did quite a lot of work on our way to Spivey Gap. Of course, we ended up walking out in the dark, as usual. Rat was smart enough to have carried a flashlight of some sort, but myself, being an optimist, didn’t think to do that. Rat was in great pain limping out those last 3 or 4 miles, and I ended up with several aches and pains, and a few contusions, mostly from tripping and falling over steps and fallen logs in the dark. Rat had carried a camera, which we quickly broke; but he has since informed me that the photos turned out well, so maybe he will link one or two them to this page.

There were some other memorable events that I should commemorate. Not the least of which was ‘Brother Dave’s’ 70th birthday party at the ‘Toberosa’. Always a good time, there was a lot of good food and friends about, including a few rather infamous musicians. It was a bit chilly, but the bon fire kept everyone warm. Unlike most years at the Toberosa, there wasn’t a football game to play this time, which was surprising! I was rather glad in a way, however, since I ended up flying over a fence one year going after a pass, and have other injuries, as well as embarassing moments to remember. No one fell in the pond, but I was offered $50 to jump in…after careful consideration, I declined, since it was quite cold, and I didn’t want to be remembered as ‘the dumbass who jumped in the pond’. Maybe if I had drank a few more beers, it might have actually happened, since I did have a change of clothes handy. Anyway, it was a good time, and was good to see some folks I hadn’t seen in a long time! My friend, Valerie, who I have known since I was 3 years old, also had a birthday party recently. I took my guitar and played awhile with some folks I used to play in a band with. Again, there was a lot of good food and friends about. Other than that, I have been very busy working. Anyway, that is some of what has been happening.
